What Are Link Wheels?
November 28, 2009 – 6:48 amEverybody is talking about link wheels these days. If you are a forum member of an Internet marketing forum then chances are you would have seen a reference made to link wheels. I will try to lighten your knowledge about these important wheels and try to help you understand what it takes to build your own link wheel.
What is a link wheel?
To start with, let’s find out what a link wheel is so that you can take part in the conversation. In short, a link wheel is a number of linked together web 2.0 sites that have been created with the purpose of building backlinks to your make money online site.
Some people say these are a waste of time, but I like to digress. The only way these wheels become obsolete is if you are spamming them.
How to make your own link wheels:
Before you even think of making your own, consider the following:
- How many sites do you want to link together in the one wheel?
- Do you want them to be linked in a one way fashion or do you prefer the wold approach (let me explain this in the next sub heading.)
- What is your purpose to build one or several link wheels.
While you might answer traffic or backlinks duh to the last bullet you still need to plan your link building activities if you don’t want to waste time.
Why backlinks?
Well, if you don’t know anything about making money online know this: it’s ALL about backlinks!
Besides having unique content that is well presented and written backlinks are the most important aspect of online business. It is backlinks that will rank you high in the search engines, not the content!
The good content will please your readers so that they come back time again.
Contrary to popular belief you can rank duplicate website very high on Google. Why else do you think everyone uses autoposts for their blogs.
Follow the two rules below depending on what your priorities are:
- If you don’t care much for repeat traffic use duplicate content (as long as it isn’t repeated on the same domain it won’t get you penalities) and focus on backlinks, lots of them.
- If your focus is on building a site that attracts a ton of repeat visitors and readers, then you should aim to publish unique and quality content plus build a ton of backlinks to your site.
For those of you who don’t understand the meaning of backlinks, let me explain this in a few short sentences:
A backlink is a hyperlink that points back to your site. If the hyperlink is properly anchored, meaning the link is the actual keyword you are trying to rank for then this is the cream of the crop of backlinks. The more authority a site has in Google the more worth the backlink from it has.
Using link wheels to build quality backlinks:
Because most web 2.0 sites are counted as authority sites by Google links from these sites back to yours is what can really help your search engine marketing – among other things. It doesn’t matter of the link is on a page rank 0 sub domain. What matters more is the actual hyperlink.
What is a web 2.0 site:
A web 2.0 site are sites like Squidoo, Hubpages, Blogger, WordPress.com, Wetpaint and many more. By publishing an article on each of these sites and then using the proper anchor text to link back to your money site you effectively build quality backlinks.

What not to do when building link wheels:
The fastest way to getting your link wheel destroyed is to write crap and then set and forget. Your time is much more valued if you set these sites up to look and read legit. Spend a bit of time and build some links to each link wheel in the chain to make them stronger.
- You can use social bookmarking
- You can submit RSS feeds
- You can use article marketing
- and more to build backlinks to your wheels
If you add pictures, video and regular updated content each of your link wheels will become a little authority site by itself over time giving your main site much more strength.
But someone told me link wheels don’t work anymore:
That could be true. It really depends how you approach your system. I already mentioned the art of building these sites to become small authority sites by themselves. It is the only time proven way your link wheels will be able to stay long term.
Because of spam issues more and more websites use human editors to scan new content. If they think your site is a cheap attempt to build link wheels make no mistake – it will be deleted. So to prevent this from happening to you, build your link wheels with quality content and think long term rather than a quick fix.

If you get 100 friends, like classmates that are all in the same profession, together and all have the same page linking each of you to each others websites, do you all benefit or does google see the same link page 100 times and penalize you?

Hi Michael,
Google will NOT penalize but it’s better to to have many other link sources and not just those 100 with the same page.

I’ve been using link wheels now for months to achieve super high SERP’s. The trick is to change up and vary the Web 2.0 properties and your linking strategies so you do not leave a footprint that is not obvious to the search engines.
